University of Hawaii regent resigns

Written on February 21, 2010

Harvey Tajiri has resigned from the University of Hawaii’s Board of Regents.

Tajiri, a Hilo resident who represented the Big Island on the board, submitted a letter of resignation on Tuesday. He did not give a reason for stepping down.

The former state representative and chairman of the Hawaii County Council was named to a five-year term on the board in 2008.

His departure will add to three other vacancies on the 15-member board that governs the 10-campus UH system.

Board members of the public university system are nominated by an advisory council and selected by Gov. Linda Lingle. Appointments are subject to approval by the state Senate.
