Ice threat suspends oil output

Written on April 4, 2008

CALGARY–Ice conditions have forced Husky Energy Inc. to suspend oil production at its 140,000-barrel-per-day White Rose oil field in the North Atlantic off Newfoundland.

Husky spokesperson Graham White said the company halted production on Tuesday when a massive ice floe moved within kilometres of the White Rose field.

"Depending on what happens with the wind, the ice could encroach closer to the position of White Rose," said White, who was unable to say when operations were expected to resume.

The White Rose field uses a ship to pump and store oil from the field, which lies 350 kilometres southeast of St low fee cash advance. John’s.

Nearby operations haven’t yet been affected. A spokesperson for the Hibernia project, the largest oil producer in the Jeanne d’Arc basin, said they were monitoring the situation closely.

Petro-Canada, which operates the 150,000-barrel-a-day Terra Nova field and owns a 27.5 per cent stake in the White Rose field, said ice was 37 kilometres east of its operations.
